Every girl that worked there (only one male barber was working) had multiple tattoos, three or four had military boots on and one was dressed in all black totally gothed out. The walls were covered with all kinds of rock band posters and album covers, and really loud music was playing, all while Sports Center was on mute on all the flat screen TVs. It felt like a weird mix between a tattoo shop, a sports bar and a record store. I got a great haircut, shampoo and shoulder massage for only $22!

When I was sitting in the chair, facing out waiting for the shampoo, the clientele struck me. Go to a tattoo shop, you see people that already have tattoos, getting more tattoos. Go to a sports bar, you’ll see fat guys drinking and eating wearing their team’s gear. Go to a record store, you’ll see hippies trying to hang on to those eclectic sounds MP3 files just can’t offer, or maybe some young people will be there trying to be hippies (or you won’t even find a record store). You may think I saw a group of tattoo covered, fat people in Broncos jerseys wearing Birkenstocks. Wrong. The overwhelming majority of the clients at Floyd’s were conservatively dressed, middle aged white males wearing Polos and sweaters. I even saw some loafers. 40 year old family men, accountants, lawyers, golfers.

We’ve all had dreams to live like rock stars or pro athletes. The guys at Floyd’s don’t go to punk concerts or get tattoos. They don’t go to Vegas on the weekends, order bottles and trash hotel suites (thanks Drew!). What they can do is go listen to loud music while an “alternative” girl in tight black jeans gives them a head massage during their lunch break. For 30 minutes, they can say “fuck the man, I don’t care.” They find a brief moment of freedom in the tattoos and boots that are Floyd’s 99. Taking breaks from the daily grind is invigorating. Floyd’s isn’t changing people’s lives, but at least they’re giving people a break and letting them have some fun. I wish more businesses/services/activities were like this. Just think, what if dentists were more like Floyd’s?
